How Will You Celebrate National Donut Day?
If you’ve been thinking about ruining your efforts to get into swimsuit shape, tomorrow is the day to ruin them. June 3 is National Donut Day, and that means the Salvation Army will take over the Krispy Kreme on Greenville Avenue. From 7 to 9 a.m., Salvation Army workers will be at the store to hand out balloons and encourage diners to make a $5 donation by texting “donut” to 50555.

National Donut Day was established in 1938 by The Salvation Army in Chicago as a depression-era outreach initiative. The special day pays tribute to The Salvation Army for distributing donuts to thousands of homesick soldiers during World War I. Salvation Army workers used wine bottles as rolling pins and leftover flour to make donuts for frying in soldiers’ steel helmets. When the soldiers returned home from the war, the donut was virtually unknown in the States, but the demand created for them by The Salvation Army’s wartime efforts resulted in countless bakeries adding donuts to their menus.
