Back in the March 25 edition, we wrote about a brewing controversy in the Texas high school swimming world, spurred on by a Highland Park dad, Pat Harris.
The issue at hand was an alleged false start by a Highland Park swimmer during the 200-yard medley at the state swim meet. The squad was eliminated, but Harris brought forward a photo that showed the team had not false-started, and that the electronic monitoring sensors were wrong.
Harris presented the evidence to the Texas Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association, and the group’s board reviewed the system during its April 15 meeting. They also reviewed video evidence from Southlake Carroll, showing a separate incident where the electronic system failed.
Recently, TISCA released a statement (see above) asking the UIL to re-implement a dual monitoring system: electronic and human judging. A third level of judging, video review, could also be used. The UIL still needs to approve the changes.
