At the Ebby Halliday gala press conference Tuesday, Myrna and Bob Schlegel served champagne and mega-cupcakes from Gigi’s. Didn’t get a chance to try one. Just wondering how they compare to Sprinkles.
They look amazing. Two observations from someone who has not had a Gigi’s: Not quite sure I would be a fan of equal portions of cake and icing. They look very nice, but it looks like you need a fork to eat them?
Um, pretty sure I would have trampled small children and old ladies to get my hands on the vanilla one (right-hand side, complete with gleaming tower o’ frosting). That is all.
I’ve had both Sprinkles and Gigi’s and I much prefer Gigi’s. A few reasons – Sprinkles is overhyped, Sprinkles’ flavors are OK, but Gigi’s seem more exotic and the line at Sprinkles is ridiculous.
While it’s true that the icing is copious, the decorations on top are cute and the flavors are really yummy.
Having said all of this, my favorite is still Society Bakery. Their strawberry with cream cheese icing cupcakes are to die for.
I’m with momof3. (Plus, you just gotta trust a mom.) Society Bakery is the best. They have these peanut butter cupcakes that – I swear – my youngest kid was gestated on (is that a term?) There is a Society in the 1st floor of Medical City. Had one when I left every appointment.
Plus, while Sprinkles is okay, I have accidentally taken a bite of that little round decoration on top a couple of times and it hurt. It’s not a normal fondant thing that you can eat.
I have to defend the Sprinkles. Their dark chocolate is just a lil blob of heaven for me. And don’t be put off by the long line, they are very quick and efficent, never a long wait.
I have to say Gigi’s rules. I have tried them all, primarily because my daughter did a writeup for the school paper on cupcakes. I stumbled across Gigi’s by accident and was so burned out on the cupcake craze I thought yuk, but boy did she restore my taste buds for cupcakes. Her treats are fresh and the icing is to die for. YUMMMM!!!
I’m professionally trained in the Culinary Arts, and personally endorse Gigi’s for their daily menu, moistness and flavor, variety, price point, and especially service! Regarding ICING: I’d rather have too much frosting and not eat it all, than not have enough and be craving more! Our company has received cupcakes as gifts from almost every company you can imagine, and the Gigi’s ones were most preferred by the 50+ people we represent!
i was very disappointed in Gigis! They looked delicious, but tasted terrible- very dry. Sprinkes is good, but Creme Dela Cookie in Snider Plaza is the best! (have not tried Society Bakery)
Another great thing about Society Bakery…they donate a lot of money to charities. You’ve got to love a great cupcake and a good cause!
If you get a chance to visit, be sure to stop by the deli and plant store next door. The deli makes wonderfully fresh sandwiches and pastas and the plant store, while small, is a great place to find unique items for gifts. Parking sometimes stinks for all three, but they make it worth circling the block.

Very good observation. Love frosting but these are a little intimidating. Now you know why I didn’t try one!

Looks WAY better than Sprinkles. Bring on the frosting!
I still don’t get all the hub bub about cupcakes.
i am sorry to say sprinkles are better and they are nicer at gigi”s

Totally forgot to mention Society Bakery. So sorry. What was my sugar-obsessed mind thinking?
@JSW: Thank you for mentioning the cute but dangerous items that sometimes dress up cupcakes. Until you bite, you never think you could chip a tooth.

Craving some now!
