When Did Valedictorians Start Talking Again?
In preparation for Park Cities People’s 30th anniversary, I recently interviewed Parnell McCarter, the 1982 valedictorian of Highland Park High School. When I asked him if he remembered anything about his commencement address, he said he didn’t give one, per district policy at the time.
McCarter theorized that the political climate of the ’70s may have led district officials to suspend the traditional speeches. But I know the valedictorians and salutatorians speak to their fellow graduates these days. Does anyone recall when the commencement addresses were reinstated?
Send that FAQ to Helen Williams. I received a quick response on my question about the history of the high school mascot.
