University Park Recycling Bins Get Bigger
Are you a University Park resident? Do you recycle? And would you find it useful to have a blue bin that holds 77 percent more recyclable items?
If you answered yes to all three questions, you may want to get a new 32-gallon recycling bin from City Hall. It’ll cost you $10, and you’ll have to give up your 18-gallon bin to get it.
Put in our request at lunch time and had a bin on our front porch late this afternoon.
Yes, a bigger bin is a great improvement to the recycling program. It would be nice if UP also contracted with a plastic bag recycling facility. Central Market s the only location nearby that accepts plastic bags.
Does the new recycle bin from the city have a lid that would have to be secured to a permanent structure? Recycling plastic bags through the city would be helpful. The Tom Thumb stores on Lover’s and in Snider plaza also accept them. There is a bin near the entrance.
You can recycle plastic bags at Super Target now!
You can recycle plastic bags at just about any grocery store, Walmart, Target, etc. Not that difficult to find a place that takes them.
Oops. I thought any plastic with the number 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or 7 could be recycled in UP (not #6, which is polystyrene), but apparently it applies only to bottles and jugs. I’ve been putting my unused Tom Thumb/Target/Central Market bags in the bin for years. Sorry, recycling gods. Does it help that I rescue cardboard boxes from my neighbors’ trash every week and put them out with my recycling?

Right, but it’s inconvenient to hold them until the next trip to a store (sometimes they are forgotten and pile up) plus UP could make more money by recyling the bags.
