Scots Set to Tackle Neighbors

The football teams from Highland Park and Hillcrest, two high schools whose attendance zones are separated only by Northwest Highway, will clash Friday night in the second round of the playoffs.

Given the campuses’ proximity, there have to be some divided households out there. Maybe an HP grad who married a Hillcrest alum, or maybe a couple with grandkids who went to both schools? If so, let us hear from you in the comments or at editor@peoplenewspapers.com.

That would be us. I was a Panther, he was a Scot. We actually met while still in high school, too. Back when the teams used to play in the regular season. Hillcrest had “Parkie” day, when we dressed in plaid skirts with bows in our hair, and HP used to have signs on the field that said “Cash Beats Trash.”. Stay classy, HP. I fondly remember the year we beat them at Highlander Stadium…

It’s ridiculous that these two schools don’t play annually. Instead, HP is forced to manufacture rivalries, when the obvious one is across NW Hwy.

Do tell: How are rivalries manufactured?
