I’m Outing Myself as Bad Speller

Signing off on a newspaper that you’ve slaved over for hours is a good feeling. Spotting a misspelled word as soon as said newspaper rolls off the press is a bad feeling. Merritt Patterson triumphantly returned to the pages of Park Cities People this week, and I welcomed her back by misspelling “ouster” as “outster” in one of the headlines above her column. D’oh! My only saving grace is that, since her column was about a gay Cub Scout leader, some readers might think I was making an intentional pun, albeit a bad one.

Oh…guess I shouldn’t point out about the dirty hair rules book that was “ammended”. I think my iPhone has desensitized me to misspellings though and it wasn’t worth mentioning at the time.

Dude, that’s okay. It’s only a newspaper, not a sacred trust or a cornerstone of democracy or anything like that. Stuff like “spelling” and “content” don’t matter! Who cares what examples we set for our kids around the kitchen table? Besides, laughing it off by telling your readership you’re a bad speller after the fact makes it all better, and comes across as super professional to boot!

In all seriousness, I’m sure you’re a very nice guy who knows his job. But the paper has seemed slapped together like a drunken afterthought ever since Jason Heid took over. I realize were not taking about the New York Times, but there’s “lighthearted stance,” and then there’s “complete joke.” No more “5 Free Weeks” promotions to litter my yard, please. If the paper ever returns to even bare minimum editorial standards, I’ll be more than happy to subscribe again. I don’t need a gimmick. I need a community paper worthy of this community.
