Did anyone else think it was strange (or annoying) that in the fair city of University Park, in the year 2010, we would be CASTING OUR BALLOTS BY FILLING IN DOTS WITH BLACK MAGIC MARKERS????
    Is this 1975?
Where are the computerized voting machines?
    What’s next–stone tablets and chisels?

All the other TTs in the area sell beer and wine so I’m sure they can put it all over the store in these two, just like the one in HPV.

Enjoying a Chardonnay purchased in Dallas at Preston Center Centennial.
Hopefully I can purchase said wine in Preston Ctr or SP Tom Thumb soon.
If not, strip club and bar will open on Hillcrest across from SMU.
Oh wait, I won’t be able to do that now that the props passed.
    WOOHOO!!!

Yep, the students down the hall at the school where we vote have Active Boards, but we get Sharpies. It was refreshingly low-tech in a high-tech world.

This is looking like a blowout. As of now, a 31 point margin for Prop. 2! About 13 points for Prop. 1.

Four out of seven precincts have reported as of 10:47 pm. All three precincts north of Lovers Lane have reported, along with a fourth precinct that appears to run between Lovers and SMU eastward from Hillcrest to Central and looping southward along Central behind the SMU campus. The three other UP precincts (from SMU westward to the tollroad) haven’t reported. The unreported precincts include large non-residential areas such as SMU, HPHS, HPMS, Snider Plaza and part of the DCC golf course, so my guess is that a large majority of votes are in, and the outstanding votes won’t change the results we’re seeing so far. Or so I hope.

    Cheers!

N.F. is busy calling all 5 people who donated to the Anti side trying to explain why their blatant lies in the mailers and on this blog failed to sway anyone.

I am so proud of my town today. People in UP are too smart to fall for door hangers and robo calls.

Now legal aged people can enjoy purchasing or not purchasing alcohol in their neighborhood stores and restaurants. Who said elections can’t fix problems?

Maybe we should put property tax hike caps on the ballet in 2012?

I am glad that these propositions passed. I think that local businesses, city tax base, and consumers are better off, and the Social Armageddon suggested by the Anti side will not happen.

I had an interest in this issue from the beginning, but was not involved in the effort other than signing the petition. The mailer from Mayor Davis with the strip club and Beale Street (Lubbock) pictures really, really offended me. I thought that it was arrogant and condescending, but most of all, thought it was dishonest. The consequence and intent of the Unicard Proposition 2 is absolutely not to introduce bars and clubs to University Park. The food and beverage TABC permit, although not infallible, is clearly more restrictive than the Private Club permit, as has been discussed at length on this blog, and establishes more fair economic rules for our local businesses. As I said elsewhere, I can understand reasonable opposition to Proposition 1 even thought I supported it. But I believe that the powers-that-be felt an obligation to oppose any proposition that “liberalized” alcohol, regardless of the underlying facts, and they went overly negative and insulted the intelligence of our city with their communications.

So, for better or worse, I believed that the only way to fight fire was to use fire. I determined to oppose every unsupported conclusion that was propagated by N.F. and the Anti side on this blog, to not let a single post go unanswered until the polls closed. I was at times shrill and uncouth, which is regrettable, but I tried to reconcile every argument to facts and logic. I think that people generally need a shower to clean off after heated election discussions; I certainly did.

Ultimately, of course, none of that mattered. Also, the Park Cities People article last week that whiffed on the details of the Anti campaign finance reports did not influence the votes. If you look at the detail of the votes on the two propositions (See http://results.enr.clarityelections.com/TX/Dallas/22800/39232/en/vts.html?cid=0217 and http://results.enr.clarityelections.com/TX/Dallas/22800/39232/en/vts.html?cid=0218), the returns on the early voting and election day results are almost exactly the same. The people of University Park spoke conclusively despite all the noise in the campaign over the last few days.

It would not surprise me to see the Anti side file protests or lawsuits to obstruct and delay the issuance of permits to businesses in University Park. That, of course, would be disappointing given those actions would be so clearly against the will of the voters. I also expect the losing side to continue to agitate over the alleged election law violations perpetrated by the Pro side. And I, for one, have had my eyes forever opened to the degree of entitlement from which our Mayor and the “establishment” will attempt to govern certain issues in our city.
