I visited Mexico twice this summer, once to the Riviera Maya with my family and once to Los Cabos with just my husband. I loved every second. There’s been so much negative publicity about Mexico these past few years, but I will tell you that I never once felt unsafe. Both times we stayed at Rosewood’s resorts which are in gated, secure communities, but we also traveled into town, tourist spots and the Mayan ruins (even taking local taxis) and it was never, ever scary or unsafe. The Mexican people were so very grateful to have Americans come to their country. Yes, parts of Mexico are scary. Parts of Dallas are scary. I love Mexico and would like to see the country succeed. OK, just not tomorrow night at Highlander Stadium.
Two of my high school friends got married in Monterrey, and they chartered a bus to carry dozens of us from Dallas to the ceremony. Between the general stress of the wedding day and the hot lights of the videographer, the groom nearly fainted during the ceremony and had to go “backstage” to recover. Until a bridesmaid came out and explained the situation, I was thinking, “Did I come all this way to see two people NOT get married?”
I love Mexico, too–the people, the food, the tequila, the beaches. I grew up surrounded by its culture, and I always feel like I am visiting home when I am there. Though I love it, I won’t be going back anytime soon. Safety is clearly an issue and there have been hijackings and kidnappings in the Yucatan of US citizens. I know several parents who are reconsidering the senior spring break trip that always seems to go to Mexico. This won’t help. http://www.examiner.com/international-travel-in-long-island/eight-murders-cancun-bar
Everything that @Kersten said, I love Mexico and have since my first trip in 1981, my senior year of high school. That first trip to Puerto Vallarta was magical. MANY trips to PV, Acapulco and Cozumel would be my favorites, too many wonderful trips to pick one memory. A ridiculous, yet fun time in Matamoros (road trip from Padre) at a bachelorette party in 1985 is a great yet hazy memory as well.
I got married in Cabo two years ago. 75 of our closest friends and family on the beach – pretty awesome stuff. Then, last year after the drugs, swine flu, etc, we decided to go back to Cabo for our anniversary. The peso was so far down and they were hurting for business so much that our trip was 1/3 the cost of the year prior (which led to multiple two hour couple massages to make up the difference). I love our neighbors to the South. Viva la Mexico!!
I love Mexico. Spent my junior year of high school as an exchange student. Go back about once a year. Drove to Cabo twice from Los Angeles with two friends surfing the whole way. My parents live in Mazatlan 1/2 the year. Already have next summers vacation planned in June.
On a side note any parent that allows their student to go to Mexico on a vacation alone with a bunch of other students for spring break is an idiot. That’ll probably make quite a few of you angry but seriously it’s got to be one of the dumbest decisions you’ll ever make.

Juarez. 1990. College. Now as a parent I cringe but do not regret.
Cozumel. Blurry.

Cabo. three days of rain. Sewage flowing up into the streets. Reminder that it is a third world country. Never to go back again.

Have vague memories of paralyzing hangovers, courtesy of Senor Frog’s, during several spring break vacations to Mazatlan during college.
