Taking it to the Streets

Members of the Highland Park High School drum line make their way down Westchester Drive, alongside the school, during the first day of band practice on Tuesday.

The Lady Scots volleyball team opens practice on Monday, while the football team starts practice on Aug. 9. The first regular season football game is Aug. 28 against Everman in the Tom Landry Classic.

Have you been outside? I’d go topless if I could get away with it.

Why does the band start in July? Why does Cross Country begin August 2? Could their not be a uniform time among these groups to begin.

I think these organizations are fabulous (and I know they are voluntary). Is it really necessary to begin this early. If football can wait until Aug 9 can’t the others?

There is no “varsity” in marching band, just one big band. During concert season (after football/marching season) there are two bands, the lower band is “Symphonic”, the upper band is the “Wind Ensemble”. Freshmen can try out for the upper band just like everyone else. As several posts about the band have shown, the HP band has seen a whole lot of turmoil in the last 4 years. Last year they had a 100% whole new staff. This year the only returning staff member is Mr. Gunter the band director, all assistants, percussion, etc. are brand new, as in hired in the last few weeks. Summer band has been 2 weeks in mid-August for many years, this year Mr. Gunter has set up a schedule that goes for over 4 weeks, some days only parts of the band, others full band.

I am very impressed with the posture of the entire front line, especailly second from the left. Being 70, I can only dream!

What’s the problem with wanting to practice earlier? If they want to get ahead of the game and practice early I can’t think of a reason that they shouldn’t. Also, considering the football team has Performance Course and other workout programs throughout the entire summer makes the “official” start date of football practice basically false.

Go see them yourself! They march around the school block every weekday at 11:15 just before they break for lunch. Fantastic!
