This just in from Detective Marty Nevil of Highland Park DPS on the pedestrian who was hit by a van at Mockingbird Lane and Abbott Avenue at around noon today:
Auto Pedestrian Accident with Serious Injury
At approximately 11:52 am on Tuesday, May 25, 2010, Highland Park DPS was notified by an SMU Police officer of an auto pedestrian accident with injuries at the intersection of Mockingbird Lane and Abbott Ave.
From the preliminary investigation and witness testimony, a white Ford van traveling northbound on Abbott Avenue, attempted to make a left hand turn on a green light, heading west onto Mockingbird Lane, failing to yield the right of way to a pedestrian. As a result, the pedestrian, 73 year old Jane Dewald Spikes of Dallas was struck in the crosswalk after leaving a funeral at Highland Park United Methodist Church heading to her car parked on Abbott Ave.
Jane Dewald Spikes was transported to a nearby hospital where she is being treated for a serious head injury.
The driver of the white Ford van was identified as Alejandro Hernandez of Irving, Texas. Mr. Hernandez was charged with, “Failure to Yield Right of Way” and arrested on non-related charges. There were no indications of alcohol or drug usage, however, tests results are still pending.
Accident Investigators from University Park PD assisted with the investigation.
The accident is still under investigation by Highland Park DPS. The final results will be released in an update.
thats so sad! poor old fellow was just leaving a friend’s funeral. what an awful day for him. and thats not fair to have such a serious injury in his older age. 🙁 That breaks my heart. I hope he makes a full recovery. how fast could this guy have been going on this left turn? a serious head injury sounds awful. this makes me so sad. poor fellow. I hope he will be okay!!
I’ll take the under on his immigration papers…
Hey Clarisse,
The victim is a woman………named Jane.
That is a very dangerous intersection for pedestrians or bicyclists. Two nights ago, my husband and I were crossing on our bikes with the green light and a car ran the red light on Mockingbird. The car almost took us out by about 3 feet of difference.
That would be a good intersection for the flashy type of crosswalk that is by UP Elementary.
Gringo, I was about to post the same thing.
I have always felt vulnerable at this intersection. On foot or in a car! It could use a left arrow into SMU / HPUMC off Mockingbird. The first words of this post to jump out at me were pedestrian / accident / Abbott and I immediately thought that something terrible had finally happened at Abbott and the Katy Trail. I hope nothing ever does but I fear that it will.
@Gringo
oh sorry! I don’t know why I thought it was a guy, it even says she! well here’s a redo!
*thats so sad! poor lady was just leaving a friend’s funeral. what an awful day for her. and thats not fair to have such a serious injury in her older age. That breaks my heart. get better soon Jane! we’re all praying for you!
Maybe Arizona has the right idea after all. Who thinks the guy has a valid drivers license? Notice he was arrested on unrelated charges?
Once you break the law by entering the country illegally, you might as well continue to break the law as there are no reprecussions.
Well I hope PCP reports it if he is here legally. Or he could be 3rd generation Texan for all we know. I promise to eat crow if you guys turn out to be right about his status, but until then I think it is unkind to speculate in the negative.
