Cockatiel on The Lam in Williams Park

University Park spokesman Steve Mace tells me that there’s a cockatiel on the loose in Williams Park. Did you recently say “Bye, bye birdie” to your feathered friend? Call UP Animal Control at 214-987-5371 or dial the city’s 3-1-1 information line. Otherwise, Mace says residents should stay clear of the bird, which is skittish. Animal control officers are trying to get it into a cage stuffed with sunflower seeds (at right).

Why not leave the bird alone?

There are hundreds of these in Lakewood. They all nest at old power station on White Rock Lake.

We don’t have the right natural environment for a Cockatiel to live a healthy life in the wild. Besides you know he belonged to someone, he wasn’t raised to survive on his own in the wild. Poor birdie.

Actually, the birds that live at White Rock are a different species. Those are Quaker Parrots and live quite nicely in the wild. I don’t think cockatiels will do as well.
