Car Burglars Were Busy Friday

I just finished typing up the crime reports we receive each week from the Highland Park Department of Public Safety. On Friday night, at least 10 vehicles were rummaged through on Gillon, Livingston, Miramar, and Southern avenues in Highland Park. Among the items taken were a Glock handgun, a DVD of the second season of Ace of Cakes, and a pair of pink Everlast boxing gloves. Read more in this week’s edition of Park Cities People.

You really have to park in your driveway to reduce the odds of breakins. And it’s shocking how how many people fail to lock their vehicles.

I wondered why the police have been so active lately. A houseguest of ours was walking at midnight near our home and waw stopped, asked to show ID, and had to wait until his ID was verified before he was allowed to leave. My adult daughters were stopped as they were carrying bags and walking on the sidewalk next door to our home and asked questions. I also had a cab driver at our home early in the morning to take me for an early flight at the airport, and he was watched by a policeman. Appreciate the protection, but I wondered what was going on.

@ Gagree: Most of these cars were parked in driveways, but most of them were unlocked.

    @ Charles: Different cars

Seldom does a week go by without a report of a gun stolen from an unlocked vehicle. I wish the police would charge the owners with reckless endangerment or some other trumped up charge so their names would appear in the blotter and we can see who these morons are.

I’m sure these individuals were simply looking for “targets of opportunity”….they find a car unlocked, they take what they can…car doors are locked, they find the ones not smart enough to lock their doors. Sorry to say, but this isn’t “the good ol’ days” anymore when we could leave our doors unlocked for one night without some jerk taking what doesn’t belong to them…but not anymore…even in “The Bubble” bad things happen. Take the first step to protect yourself and lock your cars and houses up…let the bad guys go prey on someone else.

From what I’ve heard, people leave their car doors unlocked to avoid having a window smashed. But it seems ridiculous to leave your door unlocked with valuables inside.
