HPMS Makes a Few Top Ten Lists

Frightening really. It seems that students are voting online for the prettiest 7th and 8th grade girl, hottest 7th and 8th grade guy and best dancers. I won’t link directly to the lists because there are first and last names, comments and percentages of the vote each nominee has received. But if you want to make sure your kid isn’t involved, start here or contact me.

And just in case you’re wondering if this is a different HPMS, it’s not. Promise.

Well, that’s a really bad thing on a number of levels; where to begin? Let’s see, first & last names of “hot” minors and the school they attend out there on the net for the world (and pedophiles) to see, all the hurt feelings the non-listees will have because like it or not, this stuff is IMPORTANT to middle-schoolers…the list of why this is a bad idea could go on and on. Sorry to read about it, but not surprised. This kind of thing when on in the old days (pre-technology), but since it was on paper, it was pretty much confined to school alone.

    Just saw the lists…kinda creepy.
Just a matter of time before the obligatory “worst” lists pop up(ugliest, fattest, etc).

Not thrilled by this … but I think a lot of the “people” on the list have added their own names and voted for each other. Most of them are in the same “friend” groups.

Thanks Merritt! Glad to know my 8th grader is NOT on the list. Crazy. clue to others: just search HPMS at the top of the links.

I’ll take a homebody over hottie anyday.

I agree with grump. Creepy and only a matter of time before this kind of thing gets negative and ugly.

Just to illustrate how immature and young these kids are, one of the comments is “supper hot.” Supper hot? As in, you’d rather eat your supper hot than cold?

Hardly novel except that it’s online. Girls did this when I was in middle school. Maybe it was a mid-90’s thing, now evolved. I was pretty pleased with my placement but miffed at who came in a couple spots ahead. Damn that acne.

I think everyone needs to stop making everything such a big deal. Seriously, if you want to know why your children dont tell you anything, its because you are blowing up to be bigger than it is. Let kids be kids.

EveryoneChill is obviously a student, probably even a 7th grader. As an adult, sweetie, we have knowledge and experience that you don’t have yet. This is why adults get concerned about things like beauty polls, popularity polls, drinking in 8th grade, bullying . . . little stuff like that. I was in 7th grade once and we had the exact same stuff you have to deal with except in some ways it was easier because now you have technology that makes things happen in an instant and live forever, whether you want it to or not. Don’t judge adults because you think we’re over reacting. We know a few things that you don’t.

@Been There. I understand with the alcohol and what not. I know that is unacceptable but honestly, the list about the prettiest was made by one group of girls. I know that if you arent on the list you might be offended for about 5 minutes. No one takes it seriously.

Well I’m a little sad not to be on the list, myself. Of course I’m kidding. As long as no one gets hurt or says mean things about the people out there then it’s not that big of a deal. I just hate to see anyone get hurt and something like this has the potential for that.

Seriously, did yall go look at these lists before you freaked out about them? Seems pretty stinking innocent to me. Maybe you’d rather they keep all this stuff a secret and you’ll never know what they’re thinking. At least with the type of communication devices they all use now, parents can get to it and see what is innocent and what is not. The rule at our house is that mom and dad will have your passwords or you won’t have a cell phone, facebook, email …. I thought I needed to get a facebook so i could see what my high school daughter was saying, doing. She’s boring. My facebook page is more fun and more risque than hers!

Ok I looked at the list and by being a student I do know that ALL of those girls are friends. I don’t know if they are all mean or nice since I’m not really friends with them but I DO know that there are 2 girls listed under “Hottest 8th Grade Girls” that are there as a JOKE. Those 2 girls are constantly teased to their face and behind their back. They are ALWAYS made fun of and it BUGS THE CRAP OUT OF ME. I know every school has the popular kids and the “losers” and I understand that it will probably never change, but to those who are parents of these mean students, I just don’t understand why your kids weren’t able to learn respect and kindness…

Being on the list is honestly exciting but you get over it in the first two minutes. i honestly think it was unnecessary to blog over this.

@ItsSoMean. Right on, sister (or brother).

Along BeenThere’s line, it is horrible to be at the awkward middle school age and endure harassment at school but it’s inexcusable to allow your child to harass those girls online. If your kid is involved, stop her/him NOW. When adults don’t speak up, kids hear that it’s OK.

This is dumb, i can promise you the girls who are on it probably didnt make it. only nice comments have been left. I think this article sheds light on something that is completely harmless.

I am so tired of moms getting so involved in everything children do in this community. Why don’t you all just go get your nails done or buy some shoes? Stop bothering kids. They are just trying to be kids, and if the worst thing they do, then let them do it. They are all good kids and this is just a way for them to have fun.

    Okay, first off,
those of you who are upset about the list are most likely offended that your daughter is not on the list.
Second, this has absolutely nothing to do with drinking. An eighth grade girl who finds out she isn’t ranked on a list like that isn’t going to go off and get drunk unless she was already drinking before.
Third, kids don’t care about bullying. Parents might like using the word and telling other kids not to do it but honestly, i believe that it’s just an excuse for us to gossip about our kids. Don’t deny that you do that.
And last of all; a secret. If a mom or parent tells their kid to stop doing something based off of fun, (like the lists) they are not going to stop. In fact, it will probably just provoke them.
