Churchill Rec Center Redo Moves Forward
I know of at least one project that’s moving ahead thanks to the City Council’s approval last month of the sale of $330 million worth of bonds approved in the 2006 bond package. The Park and Recreation Board gave the go-ahead Thursday for the city to seek bids for the estimated $1.7 million renovation of Churchill Recreation Center. Construction money will come from the March bond sale, said project manager Ryan O’Connor.
The renovation will include a new parking lot, new restrooms, an expansion of the building’s fire sprinkler system, and, its crowning glory, a brand new fitness center. Bidding will wrap up in a month or so, but construction won’t begin until September or so, so construction won’t interfere with summer camps and activities. Long story short, recreate while you can, because the center will be closed for about nine months during construction, depending on the specifics of the bid.
On a side note, I asked O’Connor, who I’ve spoken to about the Northaven Trail and for an Oak Cliff People story on the redo of Kidd Springs Recreation Center, how many projects he’s overseeing at the moment.
“Right now?” he said. “I don’t know. Dozens.”
