Re: Major Crash on Preston Blocks Road From Windsor to University
Steve Mace sends word to us from UPPD’s report on last night’s wreck:
The accident yesterday afternoon on Preston Road occurred at approximately 4:10 p.m. Both vehicles were northbound on Preston Road. The driver of the Honda, who was transported to Baylor, actually saw a car coming up behind her at a very fast speed. She attempted to take evasive actions by pulling over into the next lane but the heavier Cadillac, which was traveling at an unknown speed, but obviously very fast, struck the Honda in the rear. The original point of contact was at Preston and Windsor. The speed of the Cadillac actually pushed the Honda over 500 feet north where it came to rest just north of McFarlin. There was a 500 foot debris path.
The driver of the Honda was treated and released, as was the driver of the Cadillac. Charges are pending against the driver of the Cadillac as blood samples were taken and it will be a few weeks before the results return.
Due to the seriousness of the accident, UPPD traffic investigators were called to the scene. The area was closed off for several hours while they collected evidence and took necessary measures for the investigation. Speed will have to be calculated based on those measurements due to the fact that neither vehicle involved was equipped with a “black box” which we normally use to obtain that data.
Incredible … I cant believe no one else was injured! Also, cannot believe that the Honda driver was able to leave the hospital so soon. Do we know the age or gender of the Cadillac driver?
Car’s can have a “black box”? Like an airplane?
@kmom Yes they can have a black box but the Cadillac in the accident was a little too old to come with that feature.
If only they came with a breathalizer
@kmom …. yes, there are lots of electronics (see Toyota) in modern automobiles, even a sort of black box. Not all cars have a “black box”, and they record significantly different information than an airline “black box”. As long ago as the early 2000 time frame, there would be typically more than 32 computer chips in a car. In higher end cars, like Cadillac, there would usually be more. As @Scooter said, the black boxes didn’t appear until somewhat recently.
I’m just hoping that in 8 years, I can track a car that a very specific young girl will be driving, and I can download and analyze that black box information myself, if you know what I mean.
Very sad! I heard that the Honda driver was the school nurse from Armstrong and that the driver of the Cadillac was quite obviously “out of it”.
Hispanic or African American 20-30.
Not Nurse Brown! Is she ok? We love love love Nurse Brown – best school nurse EVER!
bdad – you need an I phone for your lil precious, you can activate the GPS in it and track her wherever she goes.
I am aware there are electronics involved in today’s cars, I had no idea there were black boxes on them gathering data. Who accesses the info? And how?
That area has a long history of bad accidents – usually caused by someone trying to beat the light at McFarlin. I remember back in the mid 80s when a guy ran the light on Preston, struck a car crossing at McFarlin, and crashed his car on the light post on the corner. It was a horrible scene – the car (a black Audi 5000) was wrapped completely around the pole and blood was dripping out. The man was killed instantly. A few years later, a car with two HPHS students was struck by a speeder while crossing at McFarlin. Another time (before the Audi accident if I remember correctly) someone ran the light on Preston and struck a man on a motorcycle crossing the same intersection.
Slow down, people! And put down the phone.
